VICTORIAN CASED OPHTHALMOSCOPE - S. MAW SON & THOMPSON c1885

SOLD

S. Maw Son & Thompson were established manufacturers of quality medical equipment listed under that name in London from 1870 to about 1900.

A superb example of a Victorian reflecting ophthalmoscope with a detachable handle made of brass and ivory, the body of the instrument is made of steel. The ophthalmoscope is about 5" (15cm) long when the handle is attached and is in really excellent working order and condition with both dials moving freely. The two mirrors rotate together through 360 degrees and the instrument has 11 internal and 2 external lenses all of which are intact and in excellent condition. The ophthalmoscope is stamped "MAW LONDON".

The original green velvet and leather clad case has the Maw & Thompson Trade Mark embossed on the silk part of the lid and is also in excellent condition with just some minor scuffing to the sides, the hinge and the clasp are in perfect working order. The indirect lens is missing.
