In the 1700's these types of cutters were used when sugar was bought in large conical loaves, which were then cut into smaller pieces with the implement below.

These superb cast iron sugar cutters are about 9" (22.5cm) long and weigh 8⅝oz's (243g) they are in excellent condition and working order and still have the original tension spring.
