19th C MINERS WROUGHT IRON STICKING TOMMY CANDLE HOLDER

SOLD
DECORATIVE HAND FORGED WROUGHT IRON STICKING TOMMY

Before the advent of carbide and electric lamps 19th century American gold miners used Sticking Tommys or Miners Sticks which held candles and could be hammered into the walls or hung over beams of the mine to give lighting.

Offered for auction is an authentic 19th century miners hand forged wrought iron Sticking Tommy. This particular one incorporates an elaborate "crowned thimble" for holding the candle and a decorative pattern of line and cross work along the shaft and the lower part of the hook.

The points on the hook and shaft are still sharp as are the crowns on the thimble - none of which are broken. The candles release mechanism is stiff and robust. The holder is about 10.5" (27cm) long and 3" (8cm) tall, it has a couple of small dings to the thimble and some light surface rust in places, otherwise in really excellent condition.

This is a very nice well made piece with unusual markings that would grace any collection
